Projects

Lions is a community service organisation. People join Lions because they want to user their intellect, creativity, commitment and enthusiasm to get things done.  This is where you can find out about the sorts of projects that your local Lions Club is doing.  Like what you see?  Get involved!

Woden Market

The main fund-raising activity of the Woden Lions is the running of the Southside Markets each Sunday morning of the year except between Christmas and New Year and at Easter, or when the market is cancelled because of inclement weather.

The market is held in the public carpark between Corinna St and Hindmarsh Drive, Woden (opposite Magnet Mart).

Two club members (or partners or associates) are rostered each week from 7 am to 9.30 am to collect donations at the market entrances, and two are rostered from 9.30 am to 12 noon.  One other person is rostered to collect fees from the stall-holders.

Stall-holders pay (currently)  $10 for each parking bay used, or for the equivalent space where parking bays are not marked.  Market spaces are not pre-booked; they are reserved by the stall-holders being in attendance or by merchandise for sale being laid out. Stall-holders generally arrive prior to 6 am in order to secure a good site, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas when spaces are in high demand.  Stall-holders usually start packing up at about noon, and are expected to have vacated the site by 1pm. They are also expected to take away any unsold goods, packaging etc. or place in the skip at the western end of the markert site.

Malkara Scale Model Exhibition

The Malkara Special School holds a Model Railway and Scale Model Exhibition on the first weekend of August each year.  At least two representatives of Widen Lions are rostered throughout both the Saturday and Sunday to staff the entrance to the event and collect entrance fees.

ANU Oratory

In September or October of each year the Woden Lions together with the Australian National University conduct an Oratory Competition at ANU, with prize money (totalling $1300 in 2013) donated by the Woden Lions.  2014 will be the 20th year of the competition.
